XPENG X9 third-row seats won't stow: check occupants, belts and luggage first

Scope: applies only to the X9 English right-hand-drive file labelled 2024 in XPENG's official Global manual list (XPENG_X9_2024_EN_RHD_User_Manual; the PDF foreword corresponds to IVI V5.4 and gives no exact publication date). The Global label does not prove each car's China-mainland or other-market configuration; asterisked items, configuration and OTA changes must be checked against the actual car, current software and the vehicle's own manual. This article only explains owner safety conditions and fault-report clues for folding and flip-stowing the third-row seats; it gives no seat initialisation, removal, motor or track repair steps.

If one-touch stowing does nothing, first check the preconditions

The 2024 English RHD X9 manual treats one-touch folding and flip-stowing of the third-row seats as a function with preconditions: the car in P, nobody in the third row, seats initialised, the second row suitably positioned and third-row seat belts unfastened. It also explains that the second row moves forward automatically only when unoccupied, to make room for the third row's movement. So "I pressed it and it didn't fully stow" isn't enough to conclude the button, drive motor or sensor is damaged. Before loading, first confirm the car is safely parked, then check that all occupants are out of the moving area, whether a third-row belt is still buckled and whether anyone is in the second row; never have someone sit on a moving seat to reproduce a fault. If the conditions can't be confirmed clearly from outside, or the car's messages don't match the manual, record the model, software version and messages and take them to a service centre. [1]

Luggage and anti-pinch: stopping is a clue, not permission to push harder

The manual requires removing items from the boot before flip-stowing the third row; if the system detects an obstacle, the seat stops. The anti-pinch section also says to make sure there are no people or objects on the tracks or in the range of movement before any seat moves. Note in particular: when anti-pinch triggers on the front and second rows, the seat stops and reverses a little, but on the third row it only stops, so you can't assume a trapped item will be released automatically. If a seat stops halfway, stop operating it first, keep occupants and luggage safe, and note the starting position, which side moved, whether anything intruded into the moving area and any messages. Don't keep pressing the button, lift the backrest by hand or search for the snag under a moving seat; anti-pinch is no safety guarantee for letting children, hands, feet or pets near the moving area. [1]

Check restraints before using the seats again; leave persistent faults to professionals

Stowing is only for load space; when restoring the seats for passengers, the seat and restraint state also need checking. The manual warns that the third-row head restraints can't be used by occupants in their lowest position; don't leave them there when the seat is occupied. Seat belts shouldn't be fastened while seats are adjusting, so the belt doesn't end up out of its normal protective position; and fingers or other body parts must not go under the seat. If the backrest position, head restraint or seat belt state can't be confirmed, don't seat anyone there yet. Record the occupants and luggage before the operation, where it stopped and the screen messages, and contact an XPENG service centre to check the car's configuration. The manual has a separate seat initialisation procedure, which this article doesn't turn into on-the-spot troubleshooting: initialisation moves the seats automatically to their limits, and the surrounding space and people's safety must be managed by someone familiar with this car's procedure.
