MG4 EV MY23 Matte Paint: Why Gloss-Paint Polish Advice Fails
MG4 EV MY23 owner's manual on factory matte paint: hand washing, no wax or polish, prompt contamination removal and when to go to a body shop.
MG4 EV (EU MY23) matte paint: gloss-paint polishing advice does not apply
Scope: applies only to the MG4 EV described in the official MG Motor Europe PDF file EU-MG4-MY23_Owner-Manual-20230907_compressed.pdf, Version 2.0, 7 September 2023; and the matte-care limits in this article apply only where the car is confirmed to have factory matte paint. The manual notes that configuration, software and sales region may differ; it cannot be extended to the China-market MG MULAN, other model years, gloss paint, paint protection film or later resprayed surfaces. This article covers only cleaning product choice, contamination handling and when to hand over for repair on factory matte paint; it gives no sanding, spraying, touch-up or high-pressure washing parameters.
Confirm the paint type before following the manual
On the same page, this European MY23 MG4 EV manual first says that ordinary paint can be treated with approved polishes containing mild abrasives and wax, and then immediately starts a separate "Matte paint" section. The two cannot be merged into one piece of advice: for factory matte paint, the later section explicitly prohibits abrasives, polish, polishing wax and body polishing, to preserve the matte effect. Before choosing a valeting package, confirm from the purchase documents or the service provider whether the car has factory matte paint, gloss paint, or a later wrap or respray; judging the material from colour, photos or product marketing alone is unreliable. If the material has not been confirmed, ordinary-paint waxing and scratch-filling treatments should not be applied to that surface, and this article should not be treated as care instructions for every MG4 colour. [1]
Washing matte paint: water, pressure and contact limits
The manual recommends hand-washing matte-paint vehicles, not using rough sponges or wash cloths, not washing in direct sunlight and not rubbing hard; it explicitly prohibits high-pressure water jets and steam. When the car is very dirty, first remove dust and particles that could scratch the paint, then wash from the roof down with plenty of clean water, a soft sponge and a neutral, wax-free car shampoo, and dry it. When booking a wash, owners can write "factory matte paint, no high-pressure jets or steam, wax-free products" into the instructions and ask the provider to confirm the tools and products actually used; do not scrub back and forth hard to remove a little grit, and do not use the wash-and-wax shampoo recommended for gloss paint. This article does not assume that any brand of shampoo, car-wash programme or water pressure is approved by MG. [1]
Remove contamination promptly; leave damage to professionals
The manual requires resin, grease, insect remains and bird droppings on matte paint to be removed promptly to prevent irreversible damage; oily marks or fingerprints should also be dealt with promptly using a clean cloth, without pressing harder. It also prohibits applying stickers, patches, magnets and similar items to this paint, and requires paint repairs to be carried out by a qualified professional repair workshop. Recording where the contamination was, how long it was in contact and which products have already been used helps the repairer decide what to do next, whereas "it came clean after a few more wipes" does not show that the finish is unchanged. If a new shiny patch, scratch or paint loss appears, or the nature of the contamination cannot be confirmed, stop polishing, covering with stickers or layering on chemicals, and ask a professional to check a repair plan against this car's paint; this article gives no touch-up colour codes or exceptions for local polishing.
