A used car with recall repair receipts: what else to ask before buying

Scope: method for checking recall records; receipts and VIN scope are verified officially for the market of sale

Check what the receipt actually covers

One recall repair sheet doesn't mean every recall on the car has been completed. This article suggests first checking the vehicle identity, items and completion date on the receipt, then rechecking through the official channel that covers that market. NHTSA explains that its VIN results mainly show recalls not yet repaired, which says something different from a stack of past repair sheets. [1]

Turn the seller's answers into documents

It's worth asking the seller for service records you can verify, and putting uncertain items on the pre-purchase inspection list. Whether a part replaced during ordinary repair meets the recall remedy should be confirmed officially by the brand; it can't be inferred from "the new part is already fitted". To protect privacy, don't show the full vehicle identity or personal contact details in public discussions. [1]

Don't confuse the two kinds of risk

Recall checks concern official actions; a pre-purchase inspection also deals with the car's current mechanical, structural and electrical condition. When booking a professional assessment, raise these as two separate tasks, so the report doesn't just say "recalls checked". If you receive an interim notice such as do-not-drive, follow it, and don't road test the car just to complete the sale; this article gives no purchase or safety clearance for any specific vehicle.
