Tesla Model 3 charging port frozen in winter: don't force the cable out

Scope: Model 3 2024+, North America, software 2026.32; covers only official preconditioning and when to call professionals

Freezing is a clue about conditions

The official cold weather page explains that the charging port latch may freeze, and gives information on preconditioning for this car. This article doesn't repeat the emergency release procedure; owners mustn't treat yanking the cable or pouring hot water on it as a general fix. First record the temperature, the latch status and the screen message, then follow the car's official instructions or the guidance of service staff. [1]

Give complete information when asking for help

It's worth telling the station and the vehicle service provider the model and version, the charging gun number, whether the session has ended and whether there is any damage, without first deciding the latch motor has failed. Pressure from a queue is no reason to take parts off yourself; if you have to wait for service, get people to a safe position first, take photos from outside and don't touch terminals or unknown connectors. [1]

When to stop trying

If there is visible damage, unusual heat, smoke or a safety alarm, stop plugging and unplugging and ask for help. Without a clear procedure for the model, don't use someone else's emergency release cable location. Once it's dealt with, record what the professional service did and whether further checks are needed; "got it out" can't be recorded as the system being repaired. [1]
