Tesla Model 3 Camera Repair: Asking About Calibration
The Model 3 manual says cameras need recalibrating after Tesla repairs, and sometimes after updates. What to ask so a camera repair is properly signed off.
After a Tesla Model 3 camera repair: how to ask whether calibration is needed
Scope: Model 3 2024+, North America, software 2026.32; calibration drive procedures not included
Tell calibration and cleaning apart
The official camera page explains that cameras need recalibrating after repair by Tesla, and may also need it after some software updates; until calibration is complete, related features are unavailable and a message is shown. This article doesn't treat a clean image as calibration, nor assume every repair has the same requirement. At handover, be clear which components the work involved, and ask the workshop to judge from the car's official documents whether a follow-up procedure is needed. An ordinary car wash receipt can't stand in for a camera function confirmation record. [1]
Ask questions that can be answered
It's worth asking the service provider to list the document version used, the items actually checked, the system status and any work still to be done. Just writing "matched" or "drive for a while and it'll be fine" doesn't help you understand the handover; ask the workshop who is responsible for finishing and in what state the related features may be used. Owners shouldn't reset or change system settings themselves, creating new variables. [1]
Keep the safety limits
When an unavailable message appears, follow the car's official operating limits; don't force features on, and don't approach obstacles to test them. If there are steering or braking problems as well, stop test driving and ask for help. This article gives no repair parameters, target set-ups or calibration routes; without a model basis and a recorded result, the status is still to be confirmed. [1]
