Slow EV charging: record the session before deciding the car is faulty

Scope: general charging knowledge; connectors, power and vehicle limits follow official model and station information

One low-power session isn't a parts verdict

US Department of Energy charging information explains that charging time is affected by factors including the vehicle's state, capacity, on-board charging capability and the equipment. The peak figure on a station sign can't be taken as a guarantee for every moment. This article doesn't infer a damaged battery from one low-power screenshot, nor blame every slow charge on the station. [1]

Keep a complete session record

It's worth keeping the station and charging gun number, start and end times, start and end charge levels, screen messages, the weather and whether any other problem appeared at the same time. When comparing two sessions, mark the differences in conditions; don't compare the slow end of a high-charge session with the start of a low-charge one. Once the information has gone to the station operator and the vehicle service provider, let each check its own records, rather than each verbally blaming the other. [1]

When to stop trying to charge

If there's unusual heat, smoke, a strange smell, damage or a clear safety message, stop experimenting and ask for help; don't keep switching charging guns or use adapters that haven't been checked. General speed questions can be booked for checking; safety problems call for emergency help first. This article has no terminal tests, removal, live measurements or home-made adapters; any repair conclusion needs a model and inspection basis. [1]
