US 2024 Rogue roof loads: 163 lb for side rails isn't any crossbar's limit

Scope: US-market 2024 Nissan Rogue, based on the official Nissan USA owner's manual T33-D, Publication No. OM24E0 0T33U1, main manual Printing: February 2024; limited to cars actually fitted with the roof side rails and suitable crossbars described (Roof Rack: if so equipped). Don't assume side rails are fitted from the model name or engine version, and don't apply the side rail figure to unknown aftermarket racks. Not for other markets, model years, cars without side rails or accessory models not verified; no crossbar fitting, tightening torques, lifting or overload tests.

Don't load straight onto the side rails; confirm the actual crossbars first

Two side rails on the roof don't mean you can put a box straight on them or on the roof. The manual clearly requires crossbars to be fitted before loading in the appropriate position; putting cargo directly on the side rails or roof may damage the vehicle. Genuine accessory crossbars are available from Nissan dealers, but this chapter gives no compatibility conclusion for any third-party crossbar. Before buying, give the service provider the model year, photos of the side rails, the crossbar model you have in mind and your load plan, rather than ordering from a "fits Rogue" listing. If you can't confirm how the crossbars relate to the original side rails, mounting points and the manual, pause the purchase or loading plan; don't test whether it works by pressing on the roof. [1]

163 lb is the side rail figure; crossbars and the whole vehicle have their own limits

The manual gives the roof side rails a service load capacity of 163 lb (74 kg), and states that the load limit of the accessory crossbars used must not be exceeded. It also requires that the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and front and rear axle ratings (GAWR) not be exceeded, with actual figures on the certification label on the driver's door pillar. So 163 lb can't be written up as a single allowance for any crossbar, any vehicle or all cargo. When choosing accessories and planning transport, record the requirements of the side rails, crossbars and this car's certification label separately, then have the service provider confirm the plan; without crossbar markings, load data or this car's label, don't fill in figures from photos of someone else's car. This article calculates no unverified remaining capacity, and promises no product fits. [1]

Even within rated values, consider crossbar spacing, securing and handling

The manual warns that with heavy loads on the crossbars, vehicle stability and handling may be affected in sudden or unusual manoeuvres; it also requires the crossbars to be evenly spaced and their maximum load not exceeded, and cargo to be secured with suitable ropes or straps to stop it sliding. Looking secure once fitted doesn't mean the load has been verified, especially not ignoring how occupants and other luggage use up vehicle and axle capacity. Before setting off, have a professional with the relevant product information check the actual crossbars, fixing method and load; if items come loose, driving is clearly affected or the car shows warnings in transit, stop safely to deal with it, don't reach out to hold the load while driving, and don't test strength with sharp turns. This article has no crossbar catalogue, fitting steps or fixing torques. [1]
