US 2024 Rogue CVT sudden power loss: heat protection vs fault warnings

Heat protection limits power; it doesn't confirm a part has failed

Nissan's manual says this car's CVT has a fluid high-temperature protection mode. Its example includes climbing a long hill with a heavy load in hot weather; if the temperature gets too high, the car automatically reduces engine power and, in some conditions, limits speed, to reduce the chance of transmission damage. The manual also says that when CVT fluid is hot, the gear range may shift up earlier than usual; that behaviour alone can't identify a faulty part. When recording, note the exact dashboard text, the gradient and load beforehand, weather, speed and how long it lasted for the service provider; don't buy a CVT assembly or fluid online after one power reduction. ^[1]

If speed drops below traffic or "Stop safely" appears, stop safely first

During heat protection or fail-safe, the manual warns that speed may gradually fall, even below surrounding traffic, increasing the risk of a collision; if necessary, pull over somewhere safe and wait for the car to return to normal or arrange a repair. If the dashboard shows "CVT Malfunction Stop safely", the manual lists it as a CVT system fault warning, requiring you to stop safely and have the system checked, and recommends contacting a Nissan dealer. The two descriptions can't be merged into a fixed answer of "if it's hot, keep driving". Don't climb hills again, carry heavy loads or accelerate hard to reproduce the symptom, and don't record switching off and restarting as proof the fault is cleared. ^[1]

Fluid maintenance and this power-limiting event need checking separately

The same manual's maintenance schedule lists a CVT fluid check at the 7,500-mile or 12-month point; under specified conditions such as using a roof carrier, towing or driving on muddy roads, it gives separate rules for changing the fluid or having a dealer read fluid degradation data. It doesn't say every heat protection event means an immediate fluid change. When buying, also read the manual's fluid specification: Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 or equivalent is recommended, and it must not be mixed with other fluids. The service provider should first check the car's actual use, maintenance records and diagnostic results before deciding on work; owners shouldn't top up with unknown fluid or use a "reset" to cover a persistent warning. ^[1]
