US 2024 Mach-E Power Liftgate: Height Memory and Stops
US 2024 Mach-E: power liftgate switched off in settings, height memory, obstacle detection and cold. A stop isn't proof of a failed strut.
US 2024 Mach-E power liftgate: height memory, obstacle stops and fault clues
Scope: US-market 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E, based on the official Ford Motor Company English owner's manual version 1, footer Edition date: 202310; limited to cars actually fitted with the original power liftgate. The foot-activated opening is further limited to vehicles with the hands-free feature; the manual liftgate section doesn't apply. Not extended to other model years, markets, modified liftgates or unknown configurations; no strut removal, wiring tests, power-off resets or hand-trapping tests.
Know power from manual first; a stop doesn't mean the strut has failed
This edition of the manual covers the power liftgate and the manual liftgate separately. When the power function is switched off in vehicle settings, the liftgate only unlatches and won't open or close by motor; pushing or pulling a liftgate while it's moving under power may trigger obstacle detection, stopping or reversing it, and can even look like a strut fault. When "I pressed it and it only popped open" happens, first record which liftgate the car has, the setting and whether anyone pushed or pulled it; don't take videos of the other configuration as the standard for a fault. Before using it again, keep people out of its path, especially children; don't pull, block it or put your hand in the gap to test the sensors and mechanism. [1]
Low garage height and accidental foot activation are managed separately
The manual allows a height to be saved for the power liftgate, but not below the minimum the system allows; the new height is kept, even if the battery has been disconnected. So a liftgate opening lower than last time can't on its own suggest a weak motor, and shouldn't be "cleared" by cutting power. In garages and tight spaces, first leave room above and behind the liftgate. Foot-activated opening applies only to cars with that feature, and the manual notes that splashing water, tow chains or vacuum hoses moving like a kick may trigger it. When washing the car or loading, watch the equipment in use and activity around it, and switch the power function off in this car's settings if needed; this article doesn't teach removing sensors or simulating accidental triggers. [1]
Look at the direction of the stop and the conditions before booking a repair
The manual says that if an obstacle is detected while closing, the liftgate stops and reverses to open; if detected while opening, it stops and sounds a tone. The two can't both be written up as "the liftgate bounced back by itself". The FAQ page also lists checks such as cold weather, parking on a downhill slope, the function being off, not being in P, something in the path or excessive weight on the liftgate; persistent problems may relate to low battery voltage or other system issues and should go to an authorised dealer. When reporting, record the conditions, the direction of movement, any tones and whether it didn't close fully, to help reproduce it; these clues aren't a remote diagnosis. The manual prohibits hanging items such as bike racks from the liftgate or glass, and reminds drivers to close it before driving. If the mechanism jams, there's a risk of trapping someone or it won't close fully, stop operating it and hand it to professional service. [1]
