US/Canada 2024 CR-V Auto Idle Stop: Pause or Fault?
Using the US/Canada 2024 CR-V Auto Idle Stop notes: tell a pause from a fault and check battery type limits. One missed stop doesn't mean a bad battery.
US/Canada 2024 CR-V Auto Idle Stop not working: pause, fault or battery choice
Scope: US/Canada 2024 Honda CR-V, based on the official English digital manual 00X31-3A0-6100 (A3A02424IOM/enu), limited to cars actually fitted with the Auto Idle Stop described there. This article doesn't treat the engine stopping in CR-V Hybrid operation as this system; powertrain and configuration must be checked against the car's own manual. Not for other markets, model years or powertrains; no steps for triggering tests, disconnecting the battery, resets, charging or work in the engine bay.
First tell a pause message from a flashing light that needs checking
The manual separates three types of information: the green indicator means Auto Idle Stop is operating and the engine has stopped automatically; a pause indicator may appear when the system can't operate for the moment, with a status message; and a flashing amber system indicator means there's a problem that a dealer should check. When reporting, keep the indicator's name, colour, whether it was steady or flashing and any text shown with it; don't just write that the idle stop light came on. The configuration must first match this car; don't infer how this system works from a hybrid's engine stopping. If it flashes or other warnings appear, book a check; don't buy a battery first, and don't clear the message to prove the problem is solved. [1][2]
Many conditions can prevent it; an automatic stop isn't a work state
The Auto Idle Stop section lists situations that may prevent it, such as low battery charge, low battery temperature, engine and transmission temperature conditions, and air-con demand and fan speed; charging or climate needs take priority, and may also show a pause message. So one stop without the engine stopping doesn't by itself prove the system or battery is faulty. Give the workshop the weather, air-con use, journey and exact messages, so it can judge with the car; don't create extreme temperatures or repeat stop-start tests yourself. The manual also says the engine restarts automatically when conditions change after stopping, and requires that the bonnet not be opened while Auto Idle Stop is active. Don't take a quiet engine as permission to work safely; any inspection needs professionals to set up the conditions specified for this car. [3][2]
If the battery needs replacing, check the specified type and sensor warnings separately
The manual says the original 12-volt battery is designed for vehicles with Auto Idle Stop, and that using a battery other than the specified type may shorten its life and prevent Auto Idle Stop from working; when replacing it, choose the specified type and consult a dealer. But this text gives no universal battery model that can be ordered directly, and this article adds no AGM, capacity, polarity or cross-model substitution. The battery section also says a warning appears if there is a problem with the battery sensor, and a dealer should check it; this can't be simplified into replacing the battery whenever there's a warning. A working battery also produces explosive hydrogen gas, and sparks or flames can cause serious injury. Owners should hand the original messages and replacement needs to professionals, and not disconnect the sensor, short anything or cut power to try to restore Auto Idle Stop. [3][4]
