BYD Seagull seat belt cleaning: bleach and dye can weaken the restraint

Scope: China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website file 260317; PDF p. 317, "Seat belt cleaning"

Removing stains mustn't harm the function

This manual allows the specified mild cleaning methods but prohibits bleach and dyes, explaining that these treatments may weaken the seat belt. A seat belt is an occupant restraint; a more even colour and a newer look after cleaning do not prove the webbing and mechanism still perform as they should, and dyeing must never be used to hide wear or cuts. [1]

Keep inspection and repair separate

When cleaning, also look for excessive wear, fraying and cuts; if you find any, have the workshop check the belt rather than treating it with cleaners or re-weaving. Abnormal retraction should not be put down to dirty webbing either; it may need professional assessment. This article gives no steps for removing webbing, opening the retractor or replacing the seat belt assembly. [1]

Dry and check it before use

The manual warns not to use the seat belt until it is dry. If the wrong cleaner was used, there is obvious damage or you are unsure whether it works, sort out the restraint safety first and only then let people travel. Replacement parts must match the actual vehicle; don't accept restraint parts of unknown origin, that have been dyed or whose history can't be verified. A cosmetic refresh cannot replace a safety check. [1]
