BYD Seagull Power Limit Light: Low Charge, Not a Weak Motor
The BYD Seagull power limit light comes on when traction battery charge is low and motor power is limited. Why it doesn't mean the motor is damaged.
BYD Seagull power limit light: low charge doesn't change the motor's rated power
Scope: China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website file 260317; PDF p. 45, "Drive power limit warning light"
Rated capability and output right now are different
The manual says this warning light comes on when the traction battery charge is low and motor power is limited. The rating plate or brochure describes the vehicle's specification; it does not guarantee the same output at any charge level. Weaker acceleration once at low charge is not grounds for concluding straight away that the motor is permanently damaged or that the electric drive unit needs replacing. [1]
Diagnosis can't rely on feel alone
Record the charge level at the time, the exact message, whether any powertrain or battery-related warnings also appeared, and whether the symptom persists under normal conditions of use. The manual describes one limiting condition; it is not an exclusive diagnosis for every loss of power. The workshop still needs to judge from the actual state whether there are other issues, such as temperature or system faults, to investigate. [1]
Don't test it under heavy load
If power is limited or something seems wrong, don't keep accelerating hard, climbing hills or driving at speed to test the output. Once safely stopped, arrange charging or assistance as this car's manual and the workshop advise, dealing with any other safety warnings first. This article does not promise that charging will solve the problem, and gives no methods for removing power limits, reflashing controllers or removing the electric drive. [1]
