Two situations to keep apart

The manual says that turning the steering wheel frequently at a standstill for a long time may reduce power assistance, which is the situation described by the system's overheating protection; it also clearly requires you to stop immediately in a safe place and contact a workshop when the steering fault warning light comes on. One explainable heat-protection case does not mean every sudden heaviness can be driven on while waiting for it to recover. ^[1]

Keep the conditions for diagnosis

Telling the technician whether you had been manoeuvring a lot before the steering got heavy, whether a warning light came on, whether the car was moving at the time and whether the symptom persists is more helpful than just saying the steering is broken. Do not repeatedly turn to full lock or spin the wheel quickly at a standstill to recreate it; this adds load, may make the problem worse and makes the original conditions harder to tell apart. ^[1]

When to stop

If a warning appears, unusual resistance affects control, the steering changes after an impact or there are other abnormalities, put stopping safely and professional assistance first.
