BYD Seagull ESC Light: Flashing, Steady and OFF Explained
Flashing, steady and ESC OFF mean different things on the BYD Seagull. How to read each state, what to note for the workshop, and when to stop.
BYD Seagull ESC light: flashing, steady and OFF explained
Scope: China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website file 260317; PDF pp. 44–45, 271–272, "ESC"
Intervening vs switched off: tell them apart first
This manual states that a flashing ESC indicator while driving can mean the system is intervening; a continuously lit fault warning and the ESC OFF indicator each have their own meaning. Reading every light as "the system is broken" misreads normal intervention; describing a steady light as "it is helping me drive" risks missing a stability-control fault. [1]
A flashing light is not a licence to push on
Flashing means the vehicle needs control intervention at that moment; the driver should still take care and adjust their driving, and must not treat the flashing light as a safeguard that allows continued aggressive driving. The manual also advises not to switch ESC off unless necessary; tyre and suspension modifications, and mixing different tyres, can affect the system, so fault investigation cannot focus only on the control module. [1]
What to tell the workshop, and when to stop
Note the exact icon, whether it is flashing or steady, and whether ABS and parking brake warnings appear at the same time. If several warnings appear together, stop safely as the manual instructs and contact the workshop. This article does not teach switching ESC off to get unstuck, and gives no sensor replacement or road-test steps; resolving a fault requires checking the actual vehicle configuration and a professional diagnosis.
