BYD Seagull child lock and child restraints: a locked door isn't crash safety

Scope: China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website file 260317; PDF pp. 24–27, 60 and 282, "Child protection devices", "Child lock" and "Baby mode"; asterisked equipment depends on the actual vehicle

Two kinds of protection for two different problems

The child lock stops the rear doors being opened from inside, addressing the risk of a child opening a door by mistake; seat belts and suitable child restraints provide restraint in a collision. The manual requires you to check the child lock and door status when children are on board, and to use seat belts correctly. Switching on the child lock does not mean a child can go without a restraint suited to their size. [1]

Confirm the actual vehicle's equipment

Page 60 describes the mechanical child lock catch on the side of the rear doors, while Baby mode on page 282 describes the child lock status in a software scenario; the two passages cannot be taken to mean every configuration has a software lock. Pages 24–27 separately list requirements for child protection devices. Readers should confirm the available features against the actual vehicle's configuration and the corresponding manual, and not assume from one icon on the screen that both doors are in the intended state. An adult should check the actual state before the journey, and if the control and the actual door behaviour don't match, have a workshop check it. [1]

Keep an adult in charge

The child lock also does not manage temperature, guarantee supervision or remove other dangers in the car. Do not treat locking the car, the child lock or a comfort mode as a reason to leave a child alone in the car. This article does not explain how to remove doors or adjust the lock mechanism; if the catch is damaged, a door won't open or close properly or its state is uncertain, fix the fault before children travel.
