BYD Seagull Bumper Wraps and Trim: Radar Behind the Bumper

The BYD Seagull's millimetre-wave radar sits inside the bumpers. Why film, wax, repainting, body kits and metal trim there are restricted.

BYD Seagull bumper styling: the radar is inside, so cosmetic work has limits

Scope: BYD China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website owner's manual file 260317; physical PDF pp. 130 and 132–134, driver assistance systems and sensor care; only vehicles fitted with the millimetre-wave radar described in that chapter; options, platform and software to be confirmed from official information for the actual vehicle; not a judgement on modification permission for unverified configurations; no fitting, removal or calibration steps

Exterior parts can also be a sensing path

The manual explains that the millimetre-wave radar described is mounted inside the front and rear bumpers. So the absence of a visible radar window doesn't let you decide for yourself that an area of bumper has nothing to do with driver assistance. Before detailing work or ordering trim, we suggest having an authorised service centre check this car's equipment and the areas involved, rather than judging the location from photos of another Seagull. This article gives no sensor positions, dimensions or counts, and no safe working zone that applies to every configuration. [1]

Read the two sets of restrictions together

For the area outside the radar, the manual prohibits film, wax, repainting with non-original paint, car wraps or coatings, explaining that these affect sensing performance. It also explicitly prohibits painting the bumper without authorisation, fitting body kits, or fitting metal, alloy or plated trim. The mention of "non-original paint" in the first restriction cannot be read the other way round as permission to repaint yourself with original paint. A shop's or product advert's claim that it won't block sensors cannot replace checking this car's official restrictions. [1]

After a collision, don't just restore the looks

The manual points out that if the sensor mounting area is damaged or hit, causing the sensor to shift or be damaged, the system may become unavailable, and a BYD authorised centre should be contacted to inspect and deal with it. We suggest passing on the impact location, previous work and current warnings accurately, rather than recording a repaired appearance or the absence of on-screen warnings as verified sensing performance. What repair, part replacement and professional function checks were each completed should be explained by the service provider; this article does not assume any fault must come from new trim. [1]

Don't test compatibility on the road

The manual stresses that driver assistance cannot replace the driver's attention and judgement. Don't deliberately approach obstacles or rely on assistance functions to test whether trim affects them. We suggest pausing unverified work plans and first obtaining an official basis that applies to this car; existing system problems should go to an authorised centre, and if visibility or handling is affected, stop safely and get help. This article only supports confirming information before repair; it gives no bumper removal, sensor relocation, painting or calibration procedure, and certifies no material as suitable. [1]
