BYD Seagull AVH and EPB: A White Light Doesn't Mean Held
On the BYD Seagull, a white AVH light means standby, not that the car is held. How auto hold and the parking brake differ when manoeuvring.
BYD Seagull AVH standby and EPB: a white light doesn't mean the car is held
Scope: China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website file 260317; PDF pp. 39 and 120–124, "Auto hold" and "Electronic parking brake"
Read the state, not just the feature name
Auto hold and the electronic parking brake both relate to stopping, but their purposes and states differ. This manual shows AVH standby as a white indicator and describes the activation conditions separately; the EPB's applied state has its own indicator and text message. A feature being switched on, being on standby and the brakes actually holding are three concepts that must not be confused. [1]
Take particular care when manoeuvring
The manual explains that when manoeuvring at low speed, auto hold may stay on standby and not activate. So you cannot assume, from using it at junctions, that it will hold the car automatically when reversing or edging back and forth. The driver should keep watching the gear, brake status and surroundings, and should not release the brake to test whether the car will stop by itself. [1]
Check the parking brake before leaving the car
The manual requires the EPB to be applied when parking and leaving the car, and warns against relying too much on automatic application. If the indicators look wrong, a parking system fault message appears or the car shows signs of moving, stop using it and contact professionals. This article only explains the difference between the states; it gives no electronic parking brake repair, tow mode or brake system procedures. [1]
