BYD Seagull A/C Not as Cold: Check Condenser Airflow First
A blocked BYD Seagull condenser can reduce cooling, but debris isn't proof of low refrigerant. Why A/C work needs the high-voltage system isolated first.
BYD Seagull A/C less cold: condenser airflow is a clue, not the whole diagnosis
Scope: based only on the 2026 Seagull owner's manual identified by its file name on BYD's official China website (file ID 260317; the current official PDF has 354 physical pages). The file-name date and PDF metadata are not treated as the publication date, and the exact publication date is unknown; the manual's foreword says asterisked features apply only to some configurations, and the actual vehicle, the version supplied with it and the market must be checked. This article only helps owners separate external condenser airflow clues from air conditioning service decisions; it gives no cleaning, refrigerant charging, opening of the system, power isolation or any other professional work steps.
Blocked airflow is a clue, not the only possible fault
The 2026 Seagull manual calls the air conditioning a sealed system and recommends leaving important maintenance to professionals at an authorised BYD service centre. Its physical page 326 also reminds owners to check the radiator and air conditioning condenser regularly: leaves, insects and dust on the front surface obstruct airflow and so reduce cooling. So when the air conditioning is not as cold as before, the workshop should include external airflow in its checks; but an owner seeing debris has not proved low refrigerant, a damaged condenser or a compressor fault. Equally, a cabin that doesn't feel cold is no reason to skip the airflow check and go straight to buying a can of refrigerant or ordering parts. Note the weather, speed, cooling mode and symptoms first, then have professionals check. [1]
Keep external debris and sealed-circuit checks separate on the job sheet
When describing the problem to the workshop, record separately the visible debris in front of the condenser, whether it happens only at low speed or in hot weather, the vehicle settings and the workshop's measured results. This is handover information, not permission for owners to touch parts inside the front compartment, blast the fins with a high-pressure washer or test refrigerant pressure. The manual's advice for poorer cooling is to have it repaired at an authorised BYD service centre; professionals can decide from the actual car to deal with airflow first and then look for other causes, but a photo of debris cannot show that refrigerant needs adding or which part needs replacing. The condenser, radiator and refrigerant involve different parts and work, and "clearing debris" and "refrigerant must be leaking" should not be written up as one conclusion. [1]
All air conditioning repairs share the same electrical and refrigerant conditions
The manual explicitly requires that whenever the air conditioning system is serviced, the vehicle's high-voltage supply must first be isolated by professionals following this car's procedure; the workshop must also use refrigerant recovery equipment so that refrigerant is not released into the atmosphere. The first requirement does not apply only when "the electric compressor has failed"; if an external airflow problem leads to air conditioning system work, it is not exempt either. Owners must not carry out electrical isolation, open the refrigerant circuit or charge refrigerant themselves; if a workshop cannot explain how it meets the manual's conditions, postpone the work and go to an authorised service centre. After the work, the workshop should check cooling performance again and record the actual findings and work done, so that "it feels colder" is not taken as proof that a leak or electrical safety has been checked.
