BYD Seagull ABS Doesn't Guarantee Shorter Braking Distances

The BYD Seagull manual says ABS helps prevent wheel lock and keep steering control, but does not guarantee shorter stopping distances. What that means.

BYD Seagull ABS: tyres and road surface still decide the risk

Scope: China-mainland 2026 Seagull; official website file 260317; PDF pp. 273–274, "Anti-lock braking system"

What ABS is designed to do

The manual explains that ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking under braking and helps maintain steering control, and states clearly that it does not guarantee a shorter braking distance. On gravel, snow or uneven surfaces, stopping distances may be longer. Having a feature called ABS is not a reason to follow more closely or drive faster in rain or snow. [1]

Normal ABS feedback doesn't explain every noise

The manual describes pedal vibration and noise when ABS is working. That is a symptom of a specific operating condition, not proof that every pedal judder is normal. Judder under light everyday braking, persistent pulling to one side, a change in braking performance or a warning light should all be checked separately, rather than closing the diagnosis with "the ABS is working". [1]

Leave the checks to the workshop

Before the repair, describe the road surface, how hard you were braking and what the warning lights showed, so the technician understands the context. Owners should not deliberately brake hard or provoke skids to test the system. If the brake warning and the ABS fault warning come on together, stop safely and contact a workshop. This article gives no brake bleeding, hydraulic repair or braking-force test procedures. [1]
